Taking Home a Bit of Niagara
Feb 19th, 2013 George Bailey
Niagara Falls continues to be one of the most visited places in the world and each year attracts in excess of 16 million people. I just read about a study that asked foreigners planning to visit America what would they like to see first and nine out of ten named Niagara Falls. Why?-“because we learned about Niagara Falls in school”.And, it seems, most of these people want to take home a souvenir of their visit.I can remember as a young man in the 60’s stocking the shelves of one of the gifts shops with Niagara Falls wooden plaque, snow globes that had the falls in the centre and hand decorated porcelain plates with pictures of the falls were also high on the list. Believe it or not, these souvenirs are still around. I’ve attached a few photos that I took of them in one of the gift shops this week. You have to highlight the heading of this blog to see them. Also popular then, as it is now, were guide books with photos of the falls. I’ve attached three photos found in an 1880’s guide book to look at. The fourth is a Vanity Tray with a photo of the American Falls.
