The popular Shaw Festival in nearby Niagara on the Lake begins its 56th season this Thursday, May 25th. The season opens in the Festival Theatre with the play, Saint Joan directed by Shaw’s new artistic director, Tim Carroll. Several other plays will be performed in the Festival Theatre, the Court House Theatre and the Royal George Theatre.

The Shaw Festival is the second largest repertory theatre in North America. Its original mandate was to stimulate interest in the plays of George Bernard Shaw and to advance the development of theatre arts in Canada. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 11 officially opened the Shaw Festival on June20,1973.
