I went for a drive this weekend to Locust Grove, a lovely hidden spot off the Niagara Parkway 11 kilometres north of the falls. It’s just before the entrance to Queenston Heights Park and before you make the turn down Queenston Hill.

Park your car free of charge and wander to the edge of the grove. This is where you can look across the Niagara River into Lewiston, New York. Look carefully   and you’ll see various layers of rock that formed the falls some 12,000 years ago.

You’ll also see Artpark to the left. This is an outstanding outdoor theatre that offers top-notch live entertainment in the summer performed in a lovely outdoor amphitheatre.

Spend time meandering the trail alongside the escarpment that starts here. There are plenty of squirrels and chipmunks playing under majestic Locust trees. If you’re here early in the morning, chances are that you will see turkey vultures soaking in the air currents.

This is one of Niagara Falls hidden gems.
