Father Louis Hennepin, a Recollect priest is the first European credited with writing and drawing Niagara Falls .Hennepin was accompanied by French explorer Robert Cavalier, Sieur de la Salle, on an expedition to the Niagara area in 1678.

Hennepin’s book, “New Discovery”,(first French edition,1697 ) offers an exaggerated description of the falls estimating it to be over 201 metres (600 feet).It’s really about 54 metres (177 feet).
