This presentation is an elaboration of a blog written for the Champlain Society that focused on a single letter written by Hannah Smith to her husband in December 1837. This letter is part of a larger collection of documents that comprise the Smith and Chisholm family letters collection currently housed in the Niagara Falls Museums. This presentation will examine this collection of letters and discuss what they further reveal about the Upper Canada Rebellion on the Niagara frontier and in Wellington Square.

Dr. Brian de Ruiter is an adjunct professor in the Centre for Canadian Studies at Brock University specializing in Niagara region borderland studies.
