Historic Sites in Niagara
The depth of Niagara Falls history is a surprise to many visitors. The photogenic Falls and many beautiful pruned Niagara Falls parks, belie the fact that the area was the scene of one of the most famous battles of the War of 1812 – a major turning point in Canadian history. Or that it was a significant stop on the Underground Railroad during the 19th Century. Niagara historic sites abound – particularly Forts from the 18th and 19th centuries. See the British headquarters during the war at Historic Fort George or visit Old Fort Erie, the first fort built by the British in the late 1700s and scene of one of Canada’s most horrific battles in the War of 1812. Visitors may also experience other national historic sites along the Niagara Parkway.
