With the very cold weather we have been experiencing at Niagara Falls followed by a mild thaw, a small Ice Bridge has formed below the falls. An Ice Bridge is the formation of ice from shore to shore below the falls.
Years ago people would at one time venture out onto this ice and make their way to the base of the American Falls. Following a tragic accident in 1912 when 3 people lost their lives when the Ice Bridge broke up this practise of going out onto the ice was forbidden. Attached is a photograph taken in the 1890’s of one of the more severe Ice Bridges. Look at the people on the ice below the American Falls.
